Effective equipment maintenance is essential to ensure reliability and prevent unscheduled downtime and costly failures. When lubricating oil, hydraulic fluid, filters and air cleaners are changed at a predetermined mileage or operational hour, it reduces the effectiveness of traditional maintenance procedures such as periodic tear-downs and visual inspections, causing unnecessary wastage or even disastrous, expensive failures.

Not all equipment wears at the same rate; oil deterioration varies from engine to engine, and a filter system’s effectiveness is affected by many factors. Thus, to avoid “over-maintenance” or “under-maintenance”, we use oil analysis to align maintenance with the specific need of each piece of equipment. Parts are changed only when they have exhausted their effectiveness, not before or after. Oil analysis is similar to a full blood test in our body. It is the key to maintenance that allows management to control downtime, overhaul costs, lube oil expenditure and back-up equipment inventory purchases. Through controlled maintenance, correct procedures can be established, specifications for oil, fuel and filters can be checked, and the condition of new equipment as received from manufacturers or overhaul facilities can be ascertained.
